Educational Consultation

As a special needs educational consultant, Dr. Migden helps children and young adults with learning, developmental, psychiatric, substance abuse or behavioral problems find educational or therapeutic settings that meet their unique needs. Because of his extensive experience with individuals of all ages, and his wide-ranging knowledge of placement options, Dr. Migden can help you with many types of educational and therapeutic placements, including: schools for students with learning disabilities; schools for students with psychiatric or behavioral problems; residential treatment programs; treatment programs for sexually inappropriate children and adolescents; psychiatric hospitals; substance abuse treatment programs.

With Dr. Migden, educational consultation is a dynamic, interactive process that focuses on your family member and his or her special needs. The goal is to find the educational or therapeutic setting that can best help your loved one achieve full potential, both academic and social/emotional. Dr. Migden does not make an out-of-home placement until he is assured that appropriate local resources have been tried and exhausted.

As an educational consultant, Dr. Migden’s primary obligation is to accurately and supportively represent each client, based on a careful review of the total situation. Dr. Migden does not solicit nor does he accept compensation from any school, college or therapeutic program for a placement or referral.

Dr. Migden has considerable experience with a wide range of young people and their problems. He has held professional and supervisory positions in: a psychiatric day treatment center for children and adolescents; a hospital-based learning disabilities assessment program; two university-based doctoral and post-doctoral psychology training clinics; and a residential treatment center for adolescents. He has served on a variety of professional committees, including those dealing with learning disabilities, psycho-educational assessment, and adolescent substance abuse. He has been involved in a large number of placements.

Because of his extensive experience with individuals of all ages and his wide-ranging knowledge of placement options, Dr. Migden can help you with many types of educational and therapeutic placements, including:

  • Boarding Schools
  • Learning Disabilities Schools and Programs
  • Residential Treatment Programs and Therapeutic Boarding Schools
  • Psychiatric Hospital Programs
  • Substance Abuse Treatment Programs
  • Programs for Sexually Inappropriate Youth
  • Independent Day Schools for Students with Learning, Developmental or Emotional-Behavioral Problems
  • Post-High School Programs for Students with Special Needs, including LD, ADHD, Asperger's Disorder and Psychiatric Problems

Dr. Migden travels extensively, making many first-hand visits to schools, colleges and special programs, both locally and nationally. He has personally visited almost 250 educational and therapeutic institutions throughout the country. In these visits, Dr. Migden meets with students, teachers, administrators and clinicians, and he gains personal knowledge of each setting. His site visit reports and essays are highly valued by both parents and professionals–a number of them have appeared in Places for Struggling Teens, a well-known resource directory for parents and professionals.

Of course, even the highest quality educational consultation cannot guarantee either admission or success in a particular setting. However, because Dr. Migden remains involved throughout the placement and post-placement process, the chances of finding an appropriate match for your family member are greatly increased. Once a placement has been arranged, Dr. Migden maintains contact with the new school or program, using his more than 30 years of experience to help insure a successful adjustment and a positive outcome.
